The Fontomfrom is a type of drum shaped like an hourglass. It is used in the music group of the Bono people, which is part of a royal ceremony. This drum helps the Bono monarchy share messages within the Bono ethnic group. The Fontomfrom ensemble plays music during events that honor Bono chiefs and royal processions. It is also used to repeat proverbs or copy speech patterns during royal gatherings or a royal durbar.

The Fontomfrom came from the popular hourglass-shaped drum, known as the talking drum, from the 7th century. Soon after, other drums with different shapes, such as the Dunan, Sangban, Kenkeni, and Ngoma, were made.

Before the Fontomfrom became part of the Bono royal music group, it was first brought to Bonoman by Bonohene Akumfi Ameyaw I and Bonohemaa Owusuaa Abrafi around the 1320s from North Africa. The Bono people liked music and dancing, so they used the drum for entertainment. Over time, the large Fontomfrom drum, which was once a single drum, became a group of several drums. Because it can be as tall as 2 meters or more, its image represents the grandeur of traditional African cultures.
