Fontomfrom is a type of hourglass-shaped drum used by the Bono people. It is part of a royal music group that communicates messages from the Bono monarchy within the Bono ethnic group. The Fontomfrom ensemble plays music during ceremonies that honor Bono chiefs and royal processions. It is also used to share proverbs or copy speech patterns during royal gatherings or durbar events.
The Fontomfrom developed from the hourglass-shaped talking drum of the 7th century. Soon after, other drums with different shapes, such as Dunan, Sangban, Kenkeni, and Ngoma, were created.
Before becoming part of the royal music ensemble, the Fontomfrom was brought to Bonoman by Bonohene Akumfi Ameyaw I and Bonohemaa Owusuaa Abrafi around the 1320s from North Africa. The Bono people used the drum for entertainment because they enjoy music and dancing. Over time, the single large Fontomfrom drum became a group of several drums. Its large size (up to 2 meters or more in height) makes it a symbol of the grandeur of traditional African cultures.
