The Gonguê, also called the Gonguê bell, is a percussion instrument from Brazil. It is a type of cowbell made of a large, flat iron bell that is 20–30 centimeters (7.9–11.8 inches) in size. A cable is attached to the bell to provide support. The Gonguê is played using a metal drumstick and is commonly used in music from northeastern Brazil. It helps emphasize beats and create rhythmic patterns, often using off-beats and syncopated rhythms. To reduce tiredness, players usually hold the Gonguê against their bodies. Because of its size, the Gonguê produces a loud and harsh sound, louder and more ringing than other cowbells.
