The traditional music of the Federated States of Micronesia differs a lot across the four states. Recently, it has changed into popular music inspired by Europop, country music, and reggae.
Traditional dances
Traditional dances on the main islands include "stick dancing" on Pohnpei, Chuuk, and Yap, as well as standing dances on Chuuk and sitting dances on Yap and Chuuk. The Yapese are especially known for their dancing abilities. The Yapese stick dance is performed by men, women, and children together. Standing dances are performed by either women or men and boys, but never by both groups together. Men take part in dancing competitions that are separated by social groups. Lower social groups have unique dances, such as a woman's standing dance, but they can only dance when given permission by someone of a higher social group. Chuuk and Yap share many similar dance styles because of their shared cultural background. Chuuk's most mysterious and rare dance is called the "Moonlight Dance," one of the few dances where both men and women participate together. This dance can only occur during a full moon and requires the village chief's permission. Traditionally, it was a way for young men and women to meet.
