Thundersticks, also called bambams, are long and narrow plastic balloons used as promotional noise makers. When two thundersticks are hit together, they make a loud noise. They are commonly used at sports events.
Origin and popularity
Thundersticks, called makdae pungseon (Korean: 막대풍선, meaning "stick balloons") in South Korea, were developed by BalloonStix Korea. They were first used in 1994 during an LG Twins baseball game. Later, they became popular in North America when fans of the Anaheim Angels used them during the 2002 World Series. Today, thundersticks are used by fans of many sports teams to show support. They serve a purpose similar to the Homer Hanky of the Minnesota Twins and the Terrible Towel of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Thundersticks have been seen at sporting events worldwide. They are commonly used in baseball games in Taiwan, basketball games in the Philippines, and football matches in Europe. In some places, they are known by different names, such as "bangers."
