Dvojka (formerly STV2) is a Slovak television channel that shows a wide variety of programs. It is owned and run by a public broadcasting organization called STVR, which is funded by the government.
History
In 1970, Czechoslovak Television began broadcasting its second network. Although it was meant to be one channel for all of Czechoslovakia, in reality, there were two different versions: one for the Czech region and one for the Slovak region. In September 1990, changes occurred that ended the old second channel. It was replaced by separate networks: the Czech ČTV and the Slovak S1.
When Slovakia became independent and established Slovak Television, the main channel moved to STV1 (F1 had become more "federalized" starting in 1990). STV experienced many administrative changes. In 1996, one proposal was to sell the second network and move it to cable and satellite television. A bidder supported by the government, PRO TV, won the license in June 1997. However, on June 26, the government passed a law that stopped the privatization.
In 2004, STV began a new phase with the slogan "Television that looks at you," led by Richard Rybníček. On January 1, STV2 was renamed Dvojka. This channel focused on a specific group of viewers and included programming such as cultural shows, sports events, and regional news. Before this change, the channel mainly aired repeats from the main channel. Dvojka also broadcasted new programs, including cultural talk shows, regional news from studios in Košice, Banska Bystrica, and Bratislava, a monthly program highlighting regions of Slovakia, international content, and coverage of national and international sports events. After midnight, Dvojka aired recordings of government meetings.
On December 1, 2022, the channel began broadcasting around the clock, 24 hours a day.
