Construction and functionality

The body of the atumpan is made of wood and has a hollow inside. The bottom of the drum is open, which helps the drum make louder sounds. The top of the drum is covered with animal hide that is stretched tightly. Near the top of the drum's body, there are pegs. Tension cords are attached to these pegs. The cords go to the drumhead and keep it in place. Most atumpans are about 25 centimeters (8 inches) wide and almost 60 centimeters (22 inches) tall.

The atumpan is played with bare hands or with L-shaped sticks.

History

The atumpan or ntumpane talking drum are used by the Asante and Akan people to send messages. They are commonly found in Ghana.
