The Atumpan is a kind of Asante talking drum. These drums are played in pairs and are used to create the low-pitched sounds in Adowa dance groups. They are also used in Fontomfrom music groups.
Construction and functionality
The atumpan has a wooden body with a hollow inside. The bottom of the drum is open to help it make louder sounds. The top is covered with animal hide that is stretched tightly over the drum's body. Near the top, there are pegs that hold cords. These cords are tightened to hold the drumhead in place. Most atumpans are about 25 centimeters (8 inches) wide and almost 60 centimeters (22 inches) tall.
The atumpan is played using bare hands or with L-shaped sticks.
History
The atumpan or ntumpane talking drum is used by the Asante and Akan people to send messages. These drums are commonly found in Ghana.
