Komuz

The komuz, also called qomuz, is an old string instrument without frets used in Central Asian music. It is similar to other string instruments used by Turkic people, the Mongolian tovshuur, and the lute. This instrument is played by Turkic groups in many places, from China to Turkey.

Bağlama

The bağlama, also called the saz, is a long-necked lute with frets. It is used in folk music from Turkey and nearby areas in the Middle East and Central Asia. The saz is part of a larger group of long-necked lutes called tanburs.

The setar (Persian: سه‌تار, pronounced [seˈt̪ʰɒːɾ]) is a stringed instrument, a type of lute used in Persian traditional music. It is played alone or to accompany singing. The setar belongs to the tanbur family, which includes long-necked lutes.

Tanbur

The word “Tanbur” describes several long-necked string instruments that come from Mesopotamia, Southern or Central Asia. According to the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, “the names of these instruments are confusing. Today, the term ‘tanbur’ (or ‘tambur’) is used for many different but related long-necked lutes found in traditional music and folk songs.

Rubab (instrument)

The rubab (UK: /r ʊ ˈb æ b/, US: /r ʊ ˈb ɑː b/) or robab is a musical instrument similar to a lute. It comes from Central Asia and is the official musical instrument of Afghanistan. People also play it in India and Pakistan, mainly among the Balochi, Kashmiri, and Punjabi communities.

The dutar (also spelled dotar; Persian: دوتار, romanized: dutâr; Russian: Дутар; Tajik: Дутор; Uzbek: Дутор; Uyghur: دۇتار, Дутار, romanized: Dutar; simplified Chinese: 都塔尔; traditional Chinese: 都塔爾; pinyin: Dū tǎ ěr; Dungan: Дутар) is a traditional Iranian long-necked two-stringed lute found in Iran and Central Asia. Its name comes from the Persian word for “two strings,” دوتار do tār (< دو do "two," تار tār "string"). However, the Herati dutar from Afghanistan has fourteen strings.
